Your Screensaver Takes Me Places Part 2

These new works from Laurence Owen's latest series of paintings show something of a departure from the artist's previous style. Taking on digital signage and the coded symbols of the online world, he represents reductive graphic shapes using a pastiche style of fluid brushwork. The result is a collection of flat images that recast the canvas as yet another screen. The ubiquitous pixel gets replaced by the language of painting so that these pictures layer the grandiose baggage of an art historical medium over the cheap familiarity of the digitised aesthetic.
